The National Hockey League has too many teams. How can you keep track of a sport that has 32 teams and 900 players? At the current rate, there will eventually be 48 teams and the Stanley Cup will be awarded in August.
Let's pretend that the 1967 expansion never happened. We'll ignore the 26 newer teams and just follow the Original Six: Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montréal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs. Scores will be recorded for games between those teams, and standings updated accordingly. Since this is the Original Six era, regular season games will have no overtime periods or shootouts. A tie at the end of regulation is a tie in the standings.
ORIGINAL SIX PLAYOFFS
Playoffs during the Original Six era began with two semi-final rounds: 1st place team vs. 3rd place team, and 2nd place team vs. 4th place team. Based on the final standings below, that would be Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Boston Bruins, and New York Rangers vs. Montréal Canadiens. The winners of these two rounds would then meet in the finals. Playoff results based on regular season records between these teams:

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Boston Bruins TOR 4 / BOS 0 TOR 6 / BOS 4 TOR 3 / BOS 3 TOR 4 / BOS 4 Toronto takes the series. New York Rangers vs. Montréal Canadiens NYR 4 / MTL 3 NYR 7 / MTL 2 NYR 4 / MTL 4 Rangers take the series. FINALS: Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New York Rangers NYR 4 / TOR 1 TOR 3 / NYR 2 TOR 4 / NYR 3 Toronto wins the Stanley Cup. Note that in the actual 32-team NHL, only Toronto and Montréal made the playoffs. |
