    December 23, 1943

Hello Ma:
Well, I am once again back to my squadron, having finally gotten an airplane ride to complete the last leg of my return trip. The place where I am located is one of the best here in New Guinea. Some of the visiting flying officers report that the food is better than at some of the Army camps in the United States. An old ice house, once used by the Japanese, has been put into operation and occasionally we have cold drinks on the menu at chow time. Ice in New Guinea is something rather rare. The other day I saw some of the natives playing soccer. I don't see how they keep from hurting their feet, being barefooted. I used up my last roll of films yesterday. I got some pretty good shots of smashed up Jap airplanes. Today I got a card from Phus stating that for a Christmas present I would receive a one year's subscription to Reader's Digest - thanks. Well, about my Christmas packages: I haven't gotten them yet, but I do know this. While I was away from the squadron, those packages arrived. These, of course, were then forwarded to the school. Now all that I have to do is just wait until they again come back. They will probably serve just as well as birthday presents anyway. Enclosed are a few Japanese coins. Well, I can't write much more. What would prove interesting reading would probably not pass the censor. So, until next time -

Earl

P.S. Merry Christmas!
