WORDS & MUSIC:   Earl P. Reinhalter

CHORUS: a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.

             I. militiamen march for you and me.
                 Sergeant Ray and Corporal Hinckley
parade with Chapman, Oswald and Booth.
Lieutenant Sirhan looks on with approving eyes.
this well regulated militia is a-growing in size.

CHORUS: a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.

II. over there is the Ku Klux Klan
at the rifle range with their Nazi friends.
like dogs they sniff each other's rear ends.
they know the smell of Aryan Nation
and the scent of White American Bastion.

CHORUS: what a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.

BRIDGE A: all the people see them marching.
                 some of them are clapping.
some of them are lying on the ground,
                 bleeding on the Constitution.

SPOKEN: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the
security of a free State, the right of the people to
keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

III. in the orderly room is Pretty Boy Floyd
with Billy the Kid and Bonnie and Clyde.
                 the Mafia liaison officer calls.
Jesse James walks in and salutes them all,
this well regulated militia according to law.

CHORUS: such a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.

BRIDGE B: there's a shootout in the ghetto.
                 rich ladies in their limos
point their white-gloved fingers as they shop:
"'Just say no' will make it all stop."

IV. there's a campaign map hanging on the wall.
it shows where the enemy will fall:
                 Dealey Plaza, Alan Berg's driveway,
                 Ford's Theater, the Dakota, the Lorraine Motel;
even your house... you can never tell.

CHORUS: they're a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.
                 a well, well regulated militia.

ENDING: living in a free state,
                 living in a free state,
living in a free state: JFK.
living in a free state: Garvin Gaye,
Malcolm X, Harvey Milk, John Lennon
                 MLK and Abraham Lincoln.
                 (living in a free state)
                 where you can be...
                 (living in a free state)
                 ...all you can be.
                 (living in a free state)
                 where you can be...
                 (living in a free state)
                 ...all you can be.
                 living in a free state.
                 living in a free state.
                 living in a free state.
                 living in a free state.
