WHEN COULD WE HAVE MET?
WORDS & MUSIC: Earl P. Reinhalter
were our parents ever children?
I can't imagine that.
and it seems even more certain
we've always been ourselves:
me, a veteran of the war.
you, no virgin anymore.
and now we mourn the death
of all our separate years
that could have been
measured with one clock.
but...
when could we have met?
when could we have met?
in what season?
when did you become
what I've learned to love?
when?
when could we have met?
when could we have met?
in what hour
did my eyes learn to divine
the underground springs
you possess?
when could we have met?
surely not
in the crib,
on the playground,
or homecoming day.
when could we have met?
not one day
before we did.
