MELTING BRIDGE
(Five Stages of Morning)
WORDS & MUSIC: Earl P. Reinhalter
I. I wake up as she's leaving,
gone for the Sunday news.
she'll buy a pound of coffee.
no, the coffee pot is gone.
for tea I boil the water
and throw it at the wall.
paper steams away
like a melting bridge,
melting bridge.
II. if I don't ask forever,
maybe she'll come back.
if she loves me sometime,
I could live with that.
the radio is playing:
me and the sound of pain,
two objects in one space
water steaks my face
font of grace.
CHORUS: denial, anger, bargaining, depression,
acceptance.
denial, anger, bargaining, depression,
acceptance, acceptance.
III. I've pushed every button
to find another song.
but still she doesn't love me
and hasn't all along.
the die has never been cast
there's nothing left to smash.
what's past is past.
free of her at last,
free at last.
IV. melting bridge is burning.
firemen are returning.
they cannot hinder it.
now the bridge is leaning.
water they are needing
has all flowed under it.
(repeat chorus)
ENDING: melting bridge is falling,
melting bridge is falling,
melting bridge is falling,
falling down.
melting bridge is falling,
melting bridge is falling,
melting bridge is falling,
falling down.
melting bridge is falling,
melting bridge is falling,
melting bridge is falling,
falling down,
down.
