TECHNICAL INFO

The HTML code is written from scratch using WordPad or Notepad.   Photos are taken either from video using an Intel Smart Video Recorder III video capture board, scanned on a UMAX Astra 3400 scanner (which replaced the previous UMAX Astra 600S scanner), or transferred from a digital camera.   Images are "edited" using Adobe Photoshop.   Animations are created using Microsoft's GIF Animator program, which can be downloaded for free (and worth every penny).

LA-cam

The Webcam view is the downtown Los Angeles skyline as seen from a hillside residence in Silverlake (or Silver Lake), which is about 5 miles northeast of downtown, and a few miles east of Hollywood.

The original image comes from a camcorder sitting on a tripod, and the frame-grab is done using Intel Smart Video Recorder III video capture card.   A software program called ISpy uploads a new photo at the top of every hour.

Webcam updates were originally done only during daylight hours.   Since September 2006, when a better camera was installed, the Webcam image is updated 24 hours a day.

On rare occasions, the camera has been pointed a little to the left (i.e., more to the east) in order to capture a rainbow, a sunrise, or fireworks over Dodger Stadium.

Some of the archive photos have a jagged edge along the right-hand side.   That's a palm tree (sometimes covered by ivy).   It was cut down on August, 13, 2004.

By the way, the vantage point is not a balcony, as many people believe.   What looks like a railing at the bottom of some pictures is a power line.

The LA-cam Archive Photos page has some notable images from the past.
